Pre- and Post-meeting Field Trips

Conference attendees will have multiple opportunities to participate in field trips associated with AOU 2009. The trips will be organized and led by members of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Club, one of the world’s oldest birding groups.

Philadelphia has much to offer to visitors in other respects as well. Besides the city’s famous historical sites, the region boasts numerous attractions and recreational opportunities.

Land-based birding trips

All trips listed above will leave from outside Houston Hall at UPenn. The Cape May and Bombay Hook field trips will depart at 6:30 a.m. and return around 6:00 p.m. The Hawk Mountain Sanctuary and Audubon trip will leave at 6:00 a.m. and return around 6:00 p.m.

Transportation will be by van or mini-bus and will make a 30-minute rest stop for lunch along the way. Participants will be responsible for buying their own lunch. For the Cape May and Bombay Hook trips, the minimum number of participants is six (6) people with a maximum of 24. The Hawk Mountain trip is limited to 11. In the event that the minimum is not reached for any of these, the trip may be cancelled.;

Pelagic Trips

Sunday, August 16, departing from Lewes, Delaware, on the 85’ Thelma Dale IV. Target: Baltimore Canyon. Emphasis again will be on White-faced Storm-Petrel and Long-tailed Jaeger with many other bird species as well as marine mammals. Details can be found at: http://www.paulagics.com.

AOU 2009 will provide transportation and lunch for conference attendees wishing to participate in this trip. Please sign up through the meeting web site so that you will have transportation from Houston Hall at UPenn via van. The van will depart UPenn at 2:00 a.m. and return at about 11:00 p.m. Brief stops will be made along the way to and from Lewes for breaks and food, including dinner. A box lunch to take on the boat will be provided but other food costs will be paid by individuals at the stops. This trip is limited to 11 people.;

Cost per person is $200.00 (includes van transportation, boat ticket, and box lunch)

Independent Pelagic Option

Sunday, August 9, departing from Belmar, New Jersey, on the 80’ Suzie Girl. Target: Hudson Canyon; emphasis on possible White-faced Storm-Petrel and Long-tailed Jaeger, along with many other bird species and marine mammals. Cost: $185. Details can be found at: http://www.paulagics.com.
